HYVÄÄ SYNTYMÄPÄIVÄÄ, ARTO MELLERI!

Runoilijana parhaiten tunnettu kirjailija Arto Melleri (7.9.1956 - 13.5.2005) oli aikakautensa suurimpia ja kiistellyimpiä kotimaisia tekijöitä, väkevä ajattelija joka oli sekä rytmiikan että kielikuvien omintakeinen mestari. Hänen värikkäiden elämänvaiheidensa varjoon jääneet kirjoituksensa ovat jääneet tähän päivään myös vaille kunnollista kansainvälistä huomiota. Tätä vajetta oheinen video ja erityisesti siinä esitetyt englanninkieliset käännökset pyrkivät alustavasti paikkaamaan.
Tänään, Mellerin 60-vuotisjuhlapäivänä runokollektiivi Helsinki Poetry Connection erittäin ylpeänä esittää videoteoksen, jossa kuullaan kaksi Mellerin runoa englanniksi esitettyinä ensimmäistä kertaa koskaan.
Runojen kääntäjä, kaksikielinen Kasper Salonen (joka myös esittää videossa kuultavat runot) väittää pro gradu -tutkielmassaan Melleriä nykyisen lavarunousbuumin edeltäjäksi ja spoken word -taiteilijaksi, ja Melleri itse esittikin usein ja mielellään runojaan musiikin säestyksellä, mm. kahdella äänitteellä. Tästä syystä videolla nähdään ja kuullaan myös akustinen kitara, jolla improvisoi mestarillinen Aaro Peltonen. Itse videon toteutuksesta vastaa toinen virtuoosi, mediasuunnittelija Vitali Gusatinsky.
Legendaksi asti Suomessa noussut Arto Melleri ansaitsee tulla laajemman lukijakunnan tietoisuuteen muunakin kuin boheemiarkkityyppinä ja Finlandia-voittajana -- varsinkin ulkomailla ja englanninkielisessä maailmassa. Toivottavasti tämä video saa monet marssimaan kirjastoon etsimään kadonnutta säettä; Puukkobulevardilta sitä on ennen ainakin etsitty.

Arto Melleri (Sep 7, 1956 - May 13, 2005) was a prominent Finnish writer whose work spanned four decades and several genres. He was and is best known for his poetry, for which he won the Finlandia Prize in 1991 and whose subjects ranged from idyllic but startling natural landscapes to the grit and grime but also intense beauty of urban life.
Melleri was one of the most widely discussed Finnish poets of his time, and yet his legacy has waned in his home country and has yet to be properly brought to the attention of the rest of the world. Relatively few of his poems have ever been translated into English, until now.
On this day, which would have been Melleri's 60th birthday, the Helsinki Poetry Connection is extremely proud to present a taste of his poetic genius on camera in English for the first time ever. Spoken word poet and translator Kasper Salonen has translated a wide selection of Melleri's collected works, including the two poems featured in this video, which are both from the author's award-winning 1991 collection Elävien kirjoissa ('In the land of the living').
Arto Melleri was a fascinating and much debated character, but his poems stand the test of time due to their intense visual power, their vivid and emotional strength, and their very particular rhythmic character. Salonen claims in his 2015 Master's thesis, in fact, that Melleri could well be considered a spoken word poet (or 'lavarunoilija') despite that term not being in use particularly in Finland during the author's lifetime.
Melleri was himself fond of performing his work on stage and famously with musical accompaniment (very typically for spoken word), and so HPC vice chair Salonen is joined in his recitation by fantastically talented musician Aaro Peltonen on acoustic guitar. The video itself is courtesy of another genius, this time with multimedia production, Vitali Gusatinsky.
